Job offer closed

The below job offer is no longer open, as we found someone to fill it. However, we may have similar job opportunities to offer in the future. So, if you are interested in this kind of position in the next months or years, please let us know by contacting jobs@free-electrons.com.

Job highlights

Free Electrons is looking for an experienced member of the Free Software community to satisfy increasing demand for training, consulting, support and development on embedded Linux and on the Linux kernel.

The job is home based, preferably in the south east of France, with a French permanent contract.

Practical details

  • Contract type: permanent French contract ("CDI"), with contributions to French social security and retirement.
  • Position to be filled before December 2007 (but the sooner, the better)
  • Salary: attractive, according to experience
  • Vacations: approximately 7 weeks + national holidays
  • Location: home based. Can be anywhere in Europe if you're the best match for the job, but still with the constraints of a French contract. To make meeting with colleagues simpler, we have a strong preference for locations within 1 or 2 hours of train to Nice, France. For people living far away from Nice, the best would be to relocate in the area (Provence Alpes Côte d'Azur, or in neighboring areas in Italy), in locations where housing is cheaper and easier to find. Because of intense travel, living close enough to a significant airport is also strongly recommended.

Job description

Your main activity will be to prepare and give kernel and embedded Linux training sessions for free Electrons customers worldwide. We already have lots of training materials, but they constantly need updating and extending.

In particular, one of our plans is to create a dedicated training on Linux for mobile phones. You could participate in the development of the OpenMoko project and create a full training offer from what you learned and from our existing materials.

You will also be involved in consulting, support and development work for our customers.

Last but not least, as a requirement for being a valuable trainer and consultant, you will spend at least 1/3 of your time with community projects used in embedded Linux systems: progress follow-up, sharing knowledge on public mailing lists, evaluating new techniques and resources, and contributing to these projects (such as writing code, reporting and investigating bugs, and writing documentation).

We will welcome your opinions, ideas and initiatives to give better support to our customers, to develop our business and of course to develop the use of Free Software in embedded systems. You will be given challenging opportunities and responsibilities according to your expectations, experience and interests.

Needed skills and experience

  • Visible contributions to the user and developer community. We welcome young graduates with no professional experience yet but with a long involvement in the community. Google will be your resume wink smiley.
  • Experience developing embedded Linux systems using community tools.
  • Familiarity with the Linux kernel. Linux device driver or core kernel development.
  • Fluent in oral and written English. Fluency in French is useful, but not required. Mastering other languages is welcome!
  • Other useful skills: community solutions for real-time Linux, multimedia, uClinux.
  • Should enjoy investigating unfamiliar topics, learning, writing documentation and sharing knowledge.

Job constraints

  • Involves traveling to customer locations, up to 18 weeks per year (1/3 of your time). You may even have to travel 2 or 3 times in busy months, to compensate for months with less activity.
  • Also involves traveling to international conferences. You may also prepare and give presentations in these events.
  • Often requires to write a lot of documentation.

Job advantages

  • Everything you create for Free Electrons will be released under a Free Software or Free Documentation license.
  • Guaranteed travel to international conferences: Fosdem, ELC USA, Ottawa Linux Symposium, ELC Europe.
  • At least 1/3 of your working time dedicated to participating to community projects, following-up community progress and evaluating community solutions.
  • Working from home. Great flexibility to organize your personal life (except during travel).
  • A lot of travel, for people who are interested in discovering the world, its inhabitants, and other community members in particular.

How to apply

  • Write to jobs@free-electrons.com, enclose a resume and let us know about your motivations and ideas for the job.
